BIOGRAPHIES
Peter
Alderly
Born
in 1965, Peter grew up in rural Staffordshire. He studied
at North Staffordshire Polytechnic and gained his degree
from Wolverhampton Polytechnic. After graduation he freelanced
as an artist and card designer, but in 1990 he decided to
devote himself full time to painting.
Now based in North Devon Peter works in a studio attached
to his home. He finds living close to the sea a great source
of inspiration, and his quirky character pieces often include
some coastal references. Painting in heavy bodied acrylics
on high weight water colour paper, his palette is characterised
by soft browns, mochas, creams and golds, while occasional
splashes of red bring the whole piece into focus. His work
is held in collections all over the world.
Born
in Malaysia in 1959, Deborah Ashforth spent her early childhood
living abroad where her father was serving with British Army.
After moving to England, Deborah pursued her studies in theatre
design at Wimbledon School of Art. Progressing from television
to the theatrical set design, Deborah has led the production
of the long awaited 1997 exhibition, "Dressing the Part"
in London's West End. This documents the art of costume making
from the highly dramatic theatrical costumes of grand Opera
to the romance of the ballet. Deborah's latest prject is to
design the gardens at Woodchester Park House. This commision
was won after successfully redesigning it's interior in 1996.
Whilst the majority of Deborah's time is taken up as a freelance
theatrical set designer, she always has time to devote to
painting charming portraits of Hewitt bear. Always proud to
sit for Deborah's latest compositions the infamous Hewitt
has become a regular and wellknown character. Ever popular,
with an immense international appeal, Deborah's studies of
Hewitt are highly acclaimed by a wide audience, from simply
teddy bear lovers to the true collectors or teddy bear memorabilia.

Adam
Barsby
Best Selling Artist 1998 - John Solomon Trophy. This
Leicestershire born artist has achieved this remarkable
success within his first year as a published artist.
Adam's unique look at the world using simplified styles
with rich colours has taken the art world by storm.
Born in Leicester in 1969 Adam showed an early artistic
talent which would eventually lead him to graduate from
Kent Institute of Art and Design in Maidstone with a
First Class Honours Degree. Following his graduation
in 1992 Adam worked on several freelance projects for
Art Galleries and magazines whilst developing his distinctive
style. In 1996 he decided to commit himself to painting
on a full time basis. His confidence was soon rewarded
by invitations to exhibit at many prestigious galleries
throughout the UK and the highly successful launch of
his range of limited editions and original silkscreen
prints. Adam's first major London Exhibition was held
at Harrods Picture Gallery in June 1998. Enjoyed by
a large number of specially invited guests, the show
was a resounding success.Adam draws his inspiration
from the romantic element of the world around us, and
describes his work as a natural slant from story-telling.
His unique view of life, characterised by stylised images,
rich colours and thought provoking narratives, continue
to take the art world by storm.Demand for Adam's original
paintings continues to grow and his limited editions
sell out on publication, but he is still seeking new
outlets for his ideas. His latest venture is a series
of sculptures based on some of the best-loved characters
from his existing artwork, which will no doubt bring
him yet more well deserved success.
An
independant designer based in North Essex who has been creating
stylish affordable jewellery for several years. Each piece
is handcrafted by Helen using quality products including
semi-precious gemstones, sterling silver and gorgeous glass
beads from all over the world. All designs are exclusive
so each piece of jewellery is a 'one off'. Her designs are
inspired by a passion for beautiful beads.
Personal commissions are taken and the majority can be personalised
using different gemstones & highlights.
Because the nature of the product comes from natural resources,
pieces cannot be repeated, though an alternative can be
made.
Kit
Beecroft
Is a privately
tutored - self financing artist who has turned to larger
format work in recent years, dividing his time between Scarborough
and London. Being inspired by sculptures by Henry Moore
& Barbara Hepworth and paintings by Ivon Hitchens &
David Bomberg.
Kit explains 'The most a maker of images can hope for is
that, for a moment, he or she can divert the viewer from
the daily round. In the age of mass media, bombardment of
the visual sense has seemingly limited attention spans to
a degree where `optical illiteracy` has gained ground. I
believe a painting has to be experienced as an intuitive,
feeling function, some of which is subliminal and therefore
difficult to intellectualise'.
Kit works in oil on canvas, some heavily textured; advancement
and recession where appropriate are created by thickness
of paint as well as tonal values. Now publishing high quality
limited edition Giclée prints so his artworks can
be enjoyed by even more people.
Chris
Bennett
Born in London
in 1957 and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in the
early 80s under Euan Uglow, Geoffrey Camp and Phil Sutton.
He has exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy Summer Show
and with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters at the Mall
Galleries, London. His current works are to be seen in prestigious
galleries around the UK.
A notable commission is a portrait of Sir William Hawthorne,
now in the collection of Churchill College, Cambridge who,
with Sir Frank Whittle, designed the first jet engine. Chris
paints an internal world, a distillation of something seen
or half glimpsed in life, which is digested and later realised
as a formal image; he is painting an ideal, not an idea.
The paintings are the outcome of giving an external shape
to an internal experience.
Louise
Braithwaite
Louise discovered
her talent for art and design at school, where she specialised
in screen printing. Having completed an Art Foundation Course
at Portsmouth College of Art, she embarked on a 4 year Degree
in Media and Production Design at the London College of
Printing. After graduation in 1991 she spent several months
travelling around Central America, which was to have a strong
influence on her distinctive use of both colour and shape.
Returning from her travels, Louise settled into a career
in graphic design back in London. Although her creative
talent was effective in the commercial world, she was keen
to strike out as a designer and artist in her own right,
and spent her free time producing handmade cards and illustrations
which were successfully sold through a number of retail
outlets including Harvey Nichols. She also undertook a number
of commissions for corporate Christmas cards. Then in May
1997 she moved to Hampshire and decided to go it alone as
a full-time professional artist. Over the past five years
Louise has developed a style of painting which, although
expressive, is firmly rooted in her design background. Her
high-impact oils on board are predominantly figurative;
they encapsulate the energy and buzz of a crowded scene
in a manner that is both stylised and beautifully observed.
The great love of the sea which took her back to the South
Coast is reflected throughout her work, but we can also
see a great affection for human interaction in a variety
of social and public situations.
Des
Brophy
"Having
lived by the sea for most of my younger life, early inspiration
came from the sea and costal areas I was familiar with.
I had always expressed an interest in Art. Even as a child
I would draw.At the age of 22 while a young RAF serviceman
I spent some time in the RAF hospital. To keep myself occupied
I assembled air-fix models of famous Galleons although I
soon became more interested in the detailed illustrations
which were on the front on the box that they came in! These
inspired me into taking up watercolours and in my own way
trying to attempt these images myself – not to any
great success I might add. From this however I continued
to nurture a desire to paint. It was not until I was in my
early forties that I met a local Artist (and retired Art
Teacher) John Greensmith R.W.S.. John showed great patience
and tolerated my insatiable need to learn the techniques
of handling watercolour. Resulting in paintings of local
landscapes of bleak Derbyshire moorland scenes with dramatic
and wild skies. To this day I still enjoy the beauty of
the Derbyshire moorland and villages.
Tim
was born in Northumberland in 1958, educated at Sedbergh and
later graduated from Wimbledon School of Art with an Honors
degree in theatrical design. Tim was initially employed by
a Theatre Company designing sets and arranging special effects.
A keen oberser of human life, Tim's humorous style has developed
through an exploration of the basic characteristics and personality
of a person rather than a detailed depiction. This has led
to a number commisions for a variety of restaurants, public
houses and buildings throughout the UK. Tim enjoys this work
immensely, creating collections of etchings full of eccentric
local characters. 1997 saw the release of Tim's Christmas
Card collection for Leeds Castle in Kent and a highly successful
exhibition of his work at the opening of the new Harrods Picture
Gallery. This year Tim has enjoyed a second Harrods exhibition.
An occasion which enables him to converse with hiswide ranging
audience. Although frequently asked to describe his artistic
style, Tim finds his definition
"
... a wry observation on life " a perfect analogy of
his work. Full of variety, Tim's cheeky characters and humorous
predicaments remain an integral part of his work. With his
overwhelming rise in popularity and strong international following,
the superb reputation of this country'sfinest humorous artistcan
only continue from strength to strength.

Pam
Carter

East Africa to an Austrian mother and Scottish father, Pam
moved to Scotland at the age of thirteen. She graduated
from Glasgow School of Art in the seventies and immediately
embarked on a career in teaching. After being based in Braidfeild
High School for four years, she took a year out to study
in Chicago, then spent a further two years teaching art
in the glorious setting of the Seychelles. From the mid-eighties
she taught in various colleges until in August 2004 she
gave up her academic career to concentrate on painting full
time.
Pam's dazzling seascapes originate on the rugged West Coast
of Scotland with its isolated cottages and wild colours
and amongst the majestic cliffs and fishing villages of
the East Coast. In her own words: "A sense of a place
is important in my work but for me it's not about capturing
a scene with complete accuracy. Sometimes it is the elements
and the untamed force of nature that inspire, but more than
anything it is the essential quality of the light which
can be found in the Scottish land and seascape. I often
interpret the scene with abstract elements allowing the
paint to work for me. I translate this light in terms of
contrast and colour - often bold but always with subtlety
and balance. I ultimately want to create a visual sensation
and pleasing image."
Pam's award winning artwork is held in an impressive range
of private and corporate collections. She has also held
numerous solo exhibitions throughout Britain and in the
USA and has participated in several group shows including
the Royal Scottish Society (RSA), the Royal Glasgow Institute
(RGI), Visual Arts Scotland (VAS), and the Paisley Art Institute
(PAI). She gained an award from each of the latter three
venues.

of ceaseless activity, and this is heightened by the natural
curves of the classic English harbour which provide movement
and energy. Her palette is based strongly on the colours

Helen
Rhodes
Helen is a graduate
of Loughborough College of Art and Design, holding a First
Class Degree in Textiles. Helen began her own business in
1994 producing and selling original pieces of artwork, which
were rapidly aquired by prestigious Art Galleries throughout
the country. The popularity of Helen's work stems from the
unique combination of simple yet familiar images, naive
humour and an intense richness of colour, texture and pattern.
Helen is fascinated by the history of textile design, especially
the costume and imagery of the Elizabethan period. The ripped
edges hint that each images is a fragment of a larger painting,
giving an element od preciousness to each piece. The richness
of her work is achieved through the layering of paint and
extra depth is given by the final layer of varnish. In her
new series Helen has enjoyed working to a larger scale,
using the Tuscany landscape and its farmhouseas inspiration.
With simple lines as a famework for the picture, Helen creates
a distressed and antiquated quality to the houses which
are then surrounded by colour and pattern. Bold and bright
hues "evoke real feelings of warmth" capturing
the radiance of a summers day. Helen was delighted to be
commisioned by "Queen's Bone China" to produce
six mugs. In 1994 and 1995 Helen won the Imperial Cancer
Research Christmas Card Competion, this encouraged her to
produce more images for the greeting card market. The cards
produced have been highly successful and are distributed
worldwide. Following the phenomenal response to Helens original
artwork and limited edition prints, we are delighted to
present two beautiful silk screens continuing Helens tremendous
success.
