ARTICLES

To help explain the world of Limited Edition Prints an collecting Art in general, we have written some articles, which we hope you will find of interest.

HANDY HINTS Proper Lighting Techniques

  • Choosing subdued lighting effects that will not reflect into the glass.
  • Add some atmosphere with wall lights or sconces either side of a framed print
  • Add emphasis with specialist picture lights
  • Use incandescent lamps in light fittings as these have 4% UV rays against fluorescent lamps which have a high concentration of UV rays which will eventually damage artwork
  • Do not hang any valuable artwork in direct sunlight as prolonged exposure to the suns heat can destroy your art
  • Keep light levels as low as possible
Protecting your Artwork
  • When you buy a framed print from a shop, go straight home - do not leave it in the car while you complete the rest of your shopping.
  • Take care choosing the area where the piece will be hung, so it is not damaged by ultra-violet; heat or humidity.
  • Always hang your artwork out of direct sun-light.
  • For very sunny positions or areas lit by many fluorescent lights, it is sensible to request conservation quality glass. This filters out the harmful effects of UV rays. ART for ALL or your local framer can quote you for this grade of glass.
  • Never hang valuable artwork above a heat source, like a radiator.
  • Never hang valuable artwork in an area of high humidity, like a nice warm steamy bathroom. If you find that after a few years, that `little black bugs' have got into your artwork or that the joints of the frame have widened, it is time to see your local framer. Valuable artwork can be damaged by protein from the `bugs', and may require new mounts. Loose joints increase the risk of humidity damage.

Once you have purchased your print - you take on the responsibility for that print - so look after your investment.
For details of your local framers, in the UK, go to the Fine Art Trade Guild site, and locate the Directory.
