Jan V Korthals
We now know that (Johannes Korthals)was a Dutch artist from 1st May 1916 - 1972.He studied at the 'Gerrit Rietveld Academie' in Amsterdam and confirmed, the 'Acedemie der Schone Kunsten' in Antwerp. He was a pupil of Jos Rovers but also, M.H.Mackenzie and H. Ykelenstam. He worked in Amsterdam 1940-1969, teacher of A.W.Schreuder, Member of St. Lucasgilde. Showed 4 paintings in 1939 at the Winter Exibition, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. 2 Korthals paintings were sold at Christie's, London,UK in 1997. He was known as 'the last impressionistic painter of Amsterdam" - so we now know his style. Another member has told us that in the early 70's they visited his widow, at home in Amsterdam and met their cats. There were numerous watercolours and chalk drawings stacked all over the place.
His work was published by the Donald Art Company, located in Port Chester, New York which was owned by Donald Bonnist. We do not know how many different scenes were published but the prints appear to be a mix of limited editions being numbered and signed by Jan Korthals.(The number and signature will appear below the image) and open editions that just have a printed signature in the foot of the picture- see Collecting Prints for more details.Donald Art Company appears to have gone out of business and hence why we are unable to trace any prints. However when this happened and if any copyrights were sold on - we do not know.

Folks
- we need more information and images if different to the ones shown.
We now have owners of Korthals works throughout U.S.A, Canada, Australia, New Zealand,India and Europe. Over 200 members in total & growing.

Please Note: It is not possible to give valuations - all we know is from members comments. Jan Korthals prints are only worth what a buyer will pay. Where as original work should be valued by an auction house.

How do you tell a print from an original:       We often are asked this one. Well you need quite a strong magnifying glass, if the image appears to be made up of dots then its a print, otherwise it could be an original. If there are no dots you may well have an original watercolour, and it would be worth getting a valuation from a local auction house. There are some auction house links featured on our Contact Us page. Likewise if you have an oil painting as these seem to be valuable. Whereas prints are changing hand for very little.

Members Feedback ...

  • Jennifer - bought Westminster and the Tower Bridge, London in very old framesfor £2 each - what a bargain!
  • Carol -has some interesting feedback, she found a beautiful watercolorof Trafalgar Square London at one of her local thrift shops. When she researched the artist the name was spelt differently but the style looks so similar. It is signed Jan Korthaws. In the left hand corner is
1965 Donald Art Co Inc N.Y. No 4620
Printed in Holland. Does anyone else have differently spelt signatures and are these all prints?
  • Gretta - lives in New Zealand, and has recently put together a family history. She had some old framed family wedding photos tucked away, which she wanted to have copied. Her husband removed the old frames, one being more than 50 years in age. Behind the photo they discovered what appears to be either a water colour or a print of Jan Korthals. The picture itself is approx 6 x 4 inches and attached to card board. They suspect that the picture has come from her grandmother’s farm house in Ireland, and she may have put the photo over the top of the picture. The surrounding board, and the picture are somewhat yellowed with the passing of time. It is titled in the bottom left hand corner
Grand Place Bruxelles and signed Jan Korthals. The picture is of a market square scene obviously in Brussels.
Does anyone know more about this picture? grettam@cooltainers.com

  • WS has 3 london prints framed in Chicago, USA.
  • Ed: Four years ago I married my wife in Venice! At that time I didn't know anything about the Jan Korthals painting made in Venice. A few years later my mother moved so her house was sold and I got a few boxes with old stuff. which I was going to give to a colleague of mine. The first thing that came out of a box was a book and inside was the Jan Korthals painting of Venice! What a surpise! Luckily I kept this and it is now hanging in the hallway of my house. I don't know how this Jan Korthals painting came to be in the book or how long it had been there! It's a painting from 1964 and maybe my parents were on holiday in Italy or they bought it elsewhere, I really don't know. But I'm very proud of this painting because in one off the houses on the right hand side is the house where my wife and I got married in 2000!    - now was that fate or was that fate!

  • Rosemary: contacted us to say that Van Weyenbergh Fine Arts Inc. advised that a watercolour colour by Jan Korthals would be worth about $1830.00 USD.
  • Pam: contacted us to tell us about the 2 framed pictures she found: " Just as a bit of background information, my husband and I bought these two together at a market in Leeds last year for £5 each. We bought them, obviously because we liked them, and consider it to be money well spent irrespective of wether the artist was known or not. Also written on the back of one of them someone had put "These two watercolours of Bruge Belgium were purchased for 100 cigarettes apiece in Maldegen Belgium in 1945" and was signed Ray Andrews 485 (NZ) Sqn RAF (at the time). I'm not too sure of the 'Maldegen' but that's what it looked like. As to them being called watercolours, they look to me like the images you say are prints, but either way we like them. The 'picture' area on both is 28cm x 19cm, and inscribed on the pictures are the words Groenereie, Brugge (that's the bridge one) and Burgmet Bunde Ezelstraat, Brugge on the other, together with the artist's signature. I hope I have read the writing correctly".
Burgmet Bunde Ezelstraat, Brugge
 Groenereie, Brugge
  • Philip: has advised us that at the Boyen-Y Hospital in Holland there is a large painting that the hospital commissioned Jan Korthals to paint.
  • AP: has 3 prints of London. These were published by Donald Art Company, New York but printed in Holland. Now we have tried to locate information about this publisher before, with no luck. We have assumed that they either closed down or were bought out. If it was the former then unless they sold the copyrights to the images in their portfolio then none of these could be re-published for 70 years after the firms demise.
